Just adopted a rescue or shelter dog?

1.Congrats! You've just saved a life!
Although the Mayor's Alliance and New Hope parnters are working on it, right now New York City Animal Care and Control is not a no kill shelter.Pefectly good pets are put to sleep simply because there is not enough space to hold them all til loving homes come along. So you have truly saved your pet from death row. Your new friend will thank you with a lifetime of love and companionship.

2.Welcome to the adjustment period.
Having a new pet is a little like getting  a new room mate. Your new friend will need time to adjust to your living space, your schedule, the rules of your household. In the first few weeks, your new friend may have a
"accidents" in the house, chew on a prized possession ,or have a lack of appetite.
Even though they may be a few years older, prepare your home at first as you would for a puppy or kitten. Better to be safe than sorry for that stain on a favorite rug. Be patient for both of you as you get to know each other.

3.You've become an instant pack leader!
Your pet looks to you as the leader of the pack.
Be clear about the rules you'd like your pet to live by right away.
No couch for puppy? Direct him to the dog bed. No counter crawling for kitty?Set up a cozy cat perch.Your new pet had a home before yours. Like a teenager visiting a favorite relative, your new pet may push the envelope to see what he can or can't do with you. It's up to you to set clear boundaries right from the beginning- for both your sakes!
Remember, you are building a relationship that will last 10-15 years, depending on the age of your new friend. Establish boundaries and routines for a happy life together.
